pedagogue Juan Luis Vives, which was printed over two decades later. Nebrija’s book is dedicated to the education of the children of the nobility, and was written by order of Miguel Pérez de Almazán, secretary of the State Council of the Catholic Monarchs. In it we can highlight three aspects that reveal the modernity of his ideas on education: what type of person he wants to educate, how teachers should behave, and what role does schooling play. Consistent with his humanist ideas, Nebrija advocates for an education that unfolds all the potential of human beings, including that of purely the body. And he was very opposed to corporal punishment: “Punishing children by striking them is a twisted and craven thing, and certainly an offense if it were older people (...). Thus, with children whom we want to reform, we must maintain the relationship with them by respecting them, rather than frightening them.” He insists on an exemplary nature, which must always be transmitted to the conduct of the teacher or educator: “The preceptor should assume the mindset of a father Luis Vives, que salió de la imprenta más de dos décadas después. Consecuente con sus ideas humanistas, Ne- brija aboga por una for- mación que despliegue todas las potencialidades del ser humano, también las puramente corporales. Y se muestra beligerante con los castigos físicos: “Castigar con azotes a los niños es algo deforme y servil. Y ciertamente una ofensa si se tratara de per- sonas mayores. (…). Así pues, con el niño, al que queremos enmendar, de- bemos mantener la rela- ción con él respetándolo más bien que atemori- zándolo”.
