regarding his disciples, and think that he takes on the role of that father who has given his children to him for their education. He should not have vices, nor transmit them. (...) The more frequently he informs, the more rarely he will have to punish. He must not be irascible; however, he must not dissimulate when it comes to things that he must correct.” An eloquent defense of schooling Like Aristotle, Nebrija believed that the ultimate goal of education is to prepare for future dedication to State affairs, today we would say those of community or society. For this reason, the education of children must be the responsibility of all citizens, and, although he admits that there are reasons that in some cases justify teaching by preceptors, he openly defends the role of schools as an instrument of socialization: “He who will be a citizen and, perhaps, at some point, will come to administer part of the Republic, and who must live in the midst of the celebrity of men, must get used to not fearing men and not suffering in the midst of a lonely and dismal life since childhood.” In this era of digital revolution, when the best education is a basic condition for the development of people, Nebrija’s ideas remain alive. His position in favor of an education that respects each individual’s particularities, the importance he attaches to the role of the teacher, are very current. And, after having just suffered the effects of a global health crisis that forced the closure of classrooms, we can only share his defense of schooling as a privileged environment for learning. Perhaps the most important message that, five centuries after his death, Antonio de Nebrija transmits to us is that the centrality of human beings must be vindicated in the entire educational process. In times of accelerated technological development, there is no activity more human, and more necessary, than education. “Asuma el preceptor la mente del padre res- pecto a sus discípulos y piense que ocupa el lugar de aquellos que se los han entregado para su edu- cación. Que no tenga vicios, ni los transmita. (…) Cuanto más avise con frecuencia más raramente castigará. No sea iracundo; no disimule, sin em- bargo, cuando se trate de cosas que debe corregir”. Una elocuente defensa de la escuela Como Aristóteles, Nebrija cree que el fin últi- mo de la educación es preparar para la dedicación futura a los asuntos del Estado, hoy diríamos de la comunidad o la sociedad. Por eso, la formación de los niños debe ser responsabilidad del conjunto de la ciudadanía, y, aunque admite que hay razo- nes que en algunos casos justifiquen la enseñanza por preceptores, reivindica abiertamente el papel de la escuela como instrumento de socialización: “Quien va a ser un ciudadano y, quizás, va a llegar en algún momento a administrar parte de la República y quien ha de vivir en medio de la celebridad de los hombres tiene que acostum- brarse desde niño a no temer a los hombres y no padecer en medio de una vida solitaria y como sombría”. En esta era de la revo- lución digital, cuando la mejor formación es una condición básica para el desarrollo de las perso- nas, las ideas de Nebrija se mantienen vivas. Su postura a favor de una educación respetuosa con las particularidades de cada individuo, la im- portancia que concede al papel del maestro, son plenamente actuales. Y, cuando acabamos de su- frir los efectos de una crisis sanitaria global que obligó a cerrar las aulas, no podemos sino com- partir su defensa de la escuela como el ámbito pri- vilegiado para el aprendizaje. Quizá el mensaje más importante que, cinco siglos después de su fallecimiento, nos transmi- te Antonio de Nebrija sea que hay que reivindicar la centralidad del ser humano en todo el proceso educativo.
