E l pasado mes de diciembre inauguramos, en el grupo ECEMIN de la Universidad Nebrija, uno de los Proyectos Estratégicos Orientados a la Transición Ecológica y a la Transición Digital 2021, financiados por el Ministerio de Ciencia e In- novación con el concurso de los fondos europeos Next Generation EU . Esta concesión nos ofrece el apoyo económico y cobertura necesarios para desa- rrollar, durante los próximos dos años, una agenda que aborda (creemos) algunos de los retos sociales y científicos del momento. El programa de investigación propuesto tiene tres pilares interrelacionados. La primera línea de investigación se centra en el impacto que la pobreza energética tiene en diferentes formas de bienestar individual, tales como la salud mental, la calidad y trastornos del sueño, el estrés y el bien- estar subjetivo (Objetivo 1). El análisis, que pretende diferen- ciar entre grupos de población según el género, la edad y los ingresos, busca diferenciar los efectos de la pobreza ener- gética transitoria de aquellos estados crónicos que, sospe- chamos, tienen efectos más traumáticos. Uno de los grandes desafíos en las ciencias sociales es obte- ner efectos causales. Alejados del contexto de un laboratorio y ante la imposibilidad de ma- nipular, como científicos, las variables de interés, los inves- tigadores sociales intentamos descifrar efectos causales mediante la observación minuciosa de los datos disponibles (a este respec- to, léanme -los interesados- una reciente obra, The Effect: An Introduction to Research Design and Causality , de Nick C. Huntington-Klein, excelente en todos sus aspectos). Nuestra investigación abor- da esta cuestión y, a partir de la recopilación de da- tos anuales de los precios de la energía y las fluc- tuaciones en las condiciones climáticas, pretende dilucidar el impacto que la pobreza energética tiene en el bienestar de los individuos. This grant offers us the necessary financial support and coverage to develop, over the next two years, an agenda that addresses (we believe) some of the social and scientific challenges of the moment. The proposed research program has three interrelated pillars. The first line of research focuses on the impact that energy poverty has on different forms of individual well-being, such as mental health, sleep quality and disorders, stress and subjective well-being (Objective 1). The analysis, which aims to differentiate between population groups according to gender, age and income, seeks to contrast the effects of transitory energy poverty from the chronic repercussions that, we suspect, have more traumatic effects. One of the great challenges in the social sciences is to obtain causal effects. Away from the context of a laboratory and given the impossibility of manipulating, as scientists, the variables of interest, social researchers try to decipher causal effects through careful observation of the available data (in this regard, those interested can read a recently-published book called The Effect: An Introduction to Research Design and Causality , by Nick C. Huntington-Klein, excellent on all counts). Our research addresses this question and, based on the collection of annual data on energy prices and fluctuations in climatic conditions, aims to elucidate the impact that energy poverty has on the well-being of individuals.
