Para las personas migrantes y refugiadas recién llegadas a un país, el desafío de adquirir al menos una competencia básica en el idioma se convierte en una necesidad apremiante para adaptarse a su nuevo entorno. De hecho, son numerosos los estudios que mues- tran que el dominio de la nueva lengua tiene un fuerte impacto en la integración a nivel económico, social y personal, y funciona como un verdadero ca- talizador del acceso a recursos sociales, educativos y sanitarios, así como de participación social y po- lítica, afectando, en definitiva, al bienestar general. Español, lengua de migración Según datos del último informe del Instituto Cervantes, se calcula que más de 23 millones de personas aprenden español en todo el mundo. En 2022, el número de estudiantes de español en Espa- ña ascendía a más de 130 000. Sin embargo, estos datos reflejan únicamente una parte limitada de las cifras del aprendizaje del español en este país, que deja de lado a miles de personas que, con diversas motivaciones y bagajes, por diferentes factores contextuales o personales, abandonaron sus países de origen y establecieron sus vidas –con sus lenguas, sus culturas, sus tradi- ciones– en algún lugar de ese territorio. Este tipo de datos no toma en consideración a miles de personas que, atendidas por diferentes ins- tituciones y asociaciones implicadas en la acogida de migrantes y solicitantes de asilo, aprenden espa- ñol por otros caminos que no quedan reflejados en estos informes. In fact, there are numerous studies that show that mastering a new language has a strong impact on integration at an economic, social and personal level, and works as a real catalyst for access to social, educational and health resources, as well as social and political participation, ultimately affecting their general welfare. Spanish, language of migration According to data from the latest report from Instituto Cervantes, it is estimated that over 23 million people learn Spanish around the world. In 2022, the number of Spanish students in Spain amounted to more than 130,000. However, these data reflect only a limited part of the figures for learning Spanish in this country, which do not include thousands of people who, with various motivations and backgrounds, and due to different contextual or personal factors, left their countries of origin and established their lives –with their languages, their cultures, their traditions– somewhere in Spain. This type of data does not take into account the thousands of people who, cared for by different institutions and associations involved in receiving migrants and asylum seekers, learn Spanish in other ways that are not reflected in these reports. Reception system In Spain, the international protection system includes language teaching in its reception programs. If we take into account the data from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, more than 8,000 people from non-Spanish-speaking countries received international protection recognition in 2022, and more than 2,000 in the first four months of 2023. Additionally, more than 161,000 people displaced by the Ukrainian war received temporary protection. If we added the large number of migrants in an irregular situation who attend courses offered by various organizations in our country, the numbers would be higher.
