Course in Research Methodology in Applied Linguistics for Language Teaching

Applied linguistics in language teaching is a constantly evolving field that demands rigorous research methods.

This course offers comprehensive training for graduates of professionally oriented master's degrees in foreign language teaching, who are keen on developing their research skills in designing, implementing, and analyzing empirical research.

Through a theoretical and practical approach, students will develop expertise in research methodology and design, qualitative analysis techniques, statistical techniques, as well as data collection and interpretation tools.

Course Program


Subject 1:
Research Methodology in Applied Linguistics

This subject defines the research process and describes the types of research characteristic of Applied Linguistics, including basic, applied, and practical research, as well as primary and secondary research, qualitative and quantitative research, and cross-sectional and longitudinal research. Additionally, students will become familiar with the different phases of the empirical research process (preliminary phase, research phase, and research report) and with key terminology of research design.

Subject 2:
Analysis and Transfer of Results in Applied Linguistics I: Qualitative Studies

In this subject, the concept of "qualitative" is defined in relation to methods historically associated with this type of research. The most frequently used formats in Applied Linguistics research are explained, including observational forms, research by questionnaires and interviews, and case and ethnographic forms. Additionally, students become familiar with the different phases of the qualitative research process and its transfer in academic genres of professional interest, such as research articles, analysis diaries, and doctoral theses.

Subject 3:
Analysis and Transfer of Results in Applied Linguistics II: Quantitative Studies

This subject presents the main procedures, techniques, and tests of statistical analysis, including descriptive statistics, hypothesis testing procedures, normal distribution assumptions, and correlation and comparison of means. These are complemented with exercises in data processing and interpretation, as well as activities involving critical reflection on the methodological design of studies in Applied Linguistics, particularly those focused on the learning and acquisition of foreign languages. Students also become familiar with the different stages of the quantitative methodology process and the transfer of results in academic genres of professional interest.
