Today's business and industrial environment is marked by the dynamism, uncertainty and complexity of a highly competitive global framework. A context where knowledge and the ability to innovate are decisive values.

The Doctoral Program in Engineering and Project Management is oriented towards research within this framework, understanding projects from a complex, systemic and multidisciplinary perspective. It is an itinerary focused on the process by which a project is designed, built, and systematized to obtain favorable results. The specific management part is connected to the administration of resources, of processes and with affects the different agents involved. The Doctorate in Engineering and Project Management is a comprehensive proposal, which provides space for multiple disciplines and allows research in the construction and development of projects in various professional fields, such as engineering, business, construction, architecture and urban planning.

Applicants' profile

The recommended admission profile for students who want to access this Doctoral Program is that of Graduates in Engineering and Architecture with a Master's Degree in Engineering, or similar; or with a Master's Degree in Design, Management and Project Management, or similar. For the definition of this admission profile, the recommended entry profiles of similar Doctoral degrees verified and implemented in other Spanish universities have been reviewed and taken as a reference.

Finally, in relation to the appropriate language for the admission profile, this will be Spanish.

Candidates to study for the Doctorate in Engineering and Project Management must prove knowledge of English at a level equal to or higher level than B2, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Similarly, in the case of foreign students whose mother tongue is not Spanish, they must prove knowledge of a level equal to or higher than B2, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

The language level may be accredited through official certifications, or failing that, through a certified level test from ESIC Idiomas, an official examination center that belongs to ESIC Business Marketing School, and with whom ESIC University has an agreement to certify students in English and Spanish through Cambridge and the Instituto Cervantes, respectively (https://www.esic.edu/idiomas/).

Admission requirements and criteria

Pursuant to Royal Decree 576/2023, dated July 4, amending Article 6 of Royal Decree 99/2011, issued on January 28, which governs official doctoral studies, candidates are generally required to possess an official Spanish Bachelor's Degree, or its equivalent, and a Master’s Degree to gain admission to an official doctoral program. Additionally, admission is granted to individuals who meet any of the specified exceptional criteria:

a) Candidates must either hold an official Spanish university degree, or an equivalent degree, having earned at least 300 ECTS credits and attained Level 3 of the Spanish Framework of Qualifications for Higher Education.
b) Individuals with degrees from foreign educational systems within the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), without the need for official approval, and that accredit a Level 7 of the European Qualifications Framework, provided the degree allows for doctoral study in the country of issuance. It should be noted that admission under this criterion does not equate to homologation of the applicant’s prior degree, nor its acknowledgment for any purposes beyond entry into doctoral education.
c) Candidates with a degree from foreign educational systems outside of the EHEA can also be considered for admission without the need for formal approval. The university will verify that the degree certifies a level of education equivalent to an official Spanish university Master’s degree and allows for doctoral studies in the country where the degree was issued. Admission in this category does not constitute homologation or recognition of the prior degree for any purposes beyond doctoral education.
d) Individuals with an additional Doctorate degree.
e) Additionally, university graduates who have secured a position in specialized health training and have successfully completed at least two years in a program to obtain an official degree in any of the Health Sciences specialties are considered eligible for doctoral studies.

The following scale is established for access to the Doctoral program in Engineering and Project Management:

Grade in the academic record of the bachelor's degree that grants access to the doctoral program (40%).
Grade in the academic record of the master's degree that grants access to the doctoral program (40%).
Research experience or other merits related to research (20%).

A minimum score is established for which the candidate may be admitted.

Grade in the academic record of the bachelor's degree that grants access to the doctoral program (minimum score: 2.5 out of 4).
Grade in the academic record of the master's degree that grants access to the doctoral program (minimum score: 2.5 out of 4).
Research experience or other merits related to research (minimum score: 1 out of 2).

Minimum overall score to be accepted as a candidate: 6 out of 10.

The academic commission of the degree is responsible for the admission procedure.

You will receive an email notification about the provisional decision regarding the admission to the doctorate program.
October 22 – 24
A three-day period will be provided, starting from the date of the provisional admission notification, for you to submit any claims via email.
Until October 25
All claims will be resolved.
An email notification will be sent out with the final list of admitted applicants.

Students who are admitted but fail to enroll within the period specified by the Doctoral School will forfeit their place in the program.

Thesis tutor/director assignment procedures

Tuition fees for the doctoral program

Each academic year, until the thesis is read, the student must renew their enrollment within the established deadline.

In the first year, the doctoral student must pay the registration fees and the annual tuition fees:
- Full time: €450 of Registration Fees and €1,100 of annual tuition fees.
- Part-time: €980 of Registration Fees and €570 of annual tuitions fees.
From the second year and until the end of the thesis, the student should pay the tuition fees annually, full-time €1,100 or part-time €570
In order to defend the thesis, the doctoral student must pay the thesis deposit: €1,600.
Issuance of the doctoral diploma: €311
Partial exemptions from doctoral fees can also be requested annually from the Doctoral Commission for doctoral students who actively collaborate in Nebrija research groups, among others.

Modalities

In accordance with Royal Decree 576/2023, of July 4, which modifies Royal Decree 99/2011, of January 28, which regulates official doctoral teachings:

Full-time students:
The duration of doctoral studies will be a maximum of four full-time years, counting from the date of registration of the doctoral student in the program until the date they deposit the doctoral thesis. (Before the end of the aforementioned period, if the application for deposit of the thesis is not submitted, the Academic Committee responsible for the program, upon request of the doctoral student, may authorize the extension of this period for one more year, under the conditions established in the corresponding doctoral program).
Part-time students:
The academic committee responsible for the doctoral program may authorize the completion of doctoral studies on a part-time basis. To apply for this modality, candidates will have to prove some work activity. In this case, these studies may have a maximum duration of seven years from the date of enrollment in the program to the date they deposit their doctoral thesis. (Before the end of the aforementioned period, if the application for deposit of the thesis has not been submitted, the Academic Committee responsible for the program, upon request of the doctoral student, may authorize the extension of this period for one more year, under the conditions established in the corresponding doctoral program).

Research lines

Project Engineering Research Line:

This line of research manages to frame not only knowledge management as a key tool for innovation, but also process optimization, the use of new techniques and methodologies applied to project engineering. Such is the case that, today, the scientific and professional sector in the R+D+i field considers it important to relate technological and research progress with the advancement of society, establishing itself as one of the most important parts within project engineering.

Under this outline, the objectives that are linked to this line of research provide for the development of new knowledge, practices and perspectives of analysis, promoting scientific and business innovation and encompassing a multidisciplinary approach in different areas. The objectives that are framed in this line are the further analysis of:

a) Integrated Projects. It seeks to develop solutions for the synergy of the various areas involved in the design, planning and execution of projects with a holistic vision and an emphasis on innovation.
b) Business Management Projects. Addresses problems specifically related to innovation and optimization of methodologies and strategies to increase the efficiency, quality and performance of business through the design, planning and organization of resources based on project engineering.
c) Architecture, Construction and Urbanism Projects. More detailed analysis of the needs for growth and development of infrastructure in general, with a comprehensive approach to social, economic and cultural benefits, innovating in processes and providing concrete methodologies in the design, planning and execution of projects the development of solutions to urban and architectural problems, which allow redesigning the physical spaces currently occupied by people.
d) Efficient application of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). Further analysis of the knowledge regarding the principles and optimization of processes, through the use of ICT as part of the business development strategy, proposing projects with innovative solutions to current needs.
e) Communication in Projects. Address the problems of logistics and information exchange between the various areas of the project through innovative solutions focused on its organization, analysis and summary, enhancing communication skills and integration of the basic concepts of communication in written, audiovisual and multimedia.
f) Management and Tourism Consulting. Meets the needs for evaluation and solution of problems related to the administration and operation of projects in companies dedicated to the tourism sector, through the use of innovative methodologies and processes for the management of both material and human resources.
h) Industrial Technology Projects. Further analysis of the use of engineering for the management, development and innovation of techniques, procedures and resources in a systematic way, towards sustainable projects.

Project management and Sustainable Processes Research Line:

This line of research focuses on sustainable business management from various sectors, but with a project management approach. Similarly, it seeks to delve into contributions to the financial sector, with the analysis of decisions linked to customer management projects, or the impact of their valuation in the banking sector. Contributions linked to projects related to the digital transformation of companies in various sectors are also sought. The line aims to develop work aligned with business management via projects with contributions related to sustainability management or ESG in organizations. Thus, the research team seeks to delve into research topics in project management and the impact on the greenwashing of institutions, the management of sustainability projects in family businesses, problems directly related to the implementation and inclusion of the SDGs (Agenda 2030) in project management and other related topics. Therefore, the objectives that are framed in this line are the further analysis of the knowledge of:

a) Management of sustainable projects. Further study the knowledge regarding the obligations of business with the environment and the different stakeholders, as well as its efficient communication through the creation, monitoring and updating of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policies.
b) Measurement of social and environmental impact. Establish the correct development of sustainable projects, considering the study not only of the impact on the environment, but also the measurement of its social impact and contribution to society and the environment. Avoiding undesirable activities such as those known as "greenwashing", consisting of trying to recover the reputation/brand of companies through actions only supported by misunderstood marketing.
c) Institutional legitimation of projects and SDGs. The changes made at a political, social and regulatory level worldwide and, especially, at a European level, are implying that each project is measured and that its contribution to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) is increasingly justified. Therefore, it is relevant to further analyze and study the methods and methodologies that allow future professionals and researchers to consider this institutional legitimacy in the projects.
d) Ethics and artificial intelligence. It is important to further analyze the knowledge of the management of projects that may require Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms, since they must comply with a series of principles that can only be understood from the basic principles of business ethics, and more so when these technologies, based on intensive use of data (many times personal), have the risk of incurring prohibited unethical practices of AI that are severely penalized, especially by European laws.
e) Digital transformation in project management. Project management also involves developing digital transformation projects that not only impact the technical part, but also the company's human resources. as well as its customers and suppliers. Therefore, these transformations have to be studied from a holistic perspective given their great impact on the main stakeholders.

Training activities

Doctoral students (both TP and TC) will have to complete 77 hours of training. All activities are compulsory except the mobility activity, which is optional. This activity may be carried out throughout the entire Doctoral program up to a total of 720 hours.

Engineering Week at the Higher Polytechnic School

Topics such as Intelligent and innovative Mobility, New Technologies in Cities and Transport Networks, and Science to Explain the World were discussed. It ended with the Employment Forum in which companies such as Iberdrola, Ikea, Hyundai and Deloitte took part.
